The Beer Archives: Totally Naked, July 2008

New Glarus Totally Naked. Inspired by pulp novel covers, this turned out to be fairly popular (for obvious reasons). I ended up recycling, updating, and improving this design over the next four years.

So it worked well enough at the time, but the flaws are obvious in retrospect. It’s too clean. The typefaces aren’t quite right. The colors are a little bit off. But there’s something there, and I eventually got it right in subsequent versions.

This was not my first idea, by the way. I was originally going to ape the old Coppertone ads that have a dog pulling on a little girl’s bathing suit. I have some godawful sketches of an anthropomorphic pint of beer at the beach. It was a terrible idea. Thank god I junked it. No, you can’t see it.

Well, okay…

Terrible, isn’t it?
